Final Vinyl

Experimental DJ set
Final vinyl is a performance that borrows the form of a traditional DJ set: using a collection of vinyl records selected in advance, the performer creates a musical progression with a perceptible form lasting from forty-five minutes to an hour. The only sound material used is that contained on the central groove of each record. This final groove contains no recorded “music”, yet is not silent: its irregular surface describes a short loop of unintentional sound which can be read by the stylus in exactly the same way as the rest of the record.

The content found here is of surprisingly great variety from one record to another. It includes rhythms, textures, and occasionally melodies whose complexity and richness are extremely engaging. No two records contain the same final groove: they are as unique as fingerprints. It is as if the record industry had unwittingly produced an entire parallel repertoire of sound material, whose nature is determined not by the musical choices of artists but by the unpredictable vagaries of vinyl pressing machines, of production glitches and surface imperfections.
